Forensic Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship

Overview and Mission: The Price Proctor Forensic Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship is a full-time, one-year training program (2,000 hours) designed to prepare psychologists for independent practice and board certification (ABPP) in forensic psychology. Modeled after premier national programs, our fellowship provides advanced specialization in forensic mental health assessment within a private practice setting.

Applied Clinical Experience: Fellows spend the majority of their time providing direct forensic evaluation services. While the program emphasizes criminal competencies (e.g., CST, criminal responsibility, and risk assessment), trainees also gain experience in diverse areas including:

  • Public safety/occupational evaluations

  • Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) civil commitment

  • Personal injury and disability litigation

  • Juvenile forensic matters and neuropsychological assessments

  • Exposure to expert testimony and court consultation

Structured Curriculum and Didactics: Our comprehensive curriculum is built upon ABFP core competencies, including forensic ethics, mental health law, and multicultural diversity. A cornerstone of the program is our interdisciplinary partnership with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). Fellows participate in:

  • UTSW Forensic Psychiatry Didactic Seminar Series: Foundational instruction in legal regulation, dangerousness assessment, and report writing.

  • UTSW Landmark Case Series: A rigorous review of pivotal state and federal case law required for board certification.

  • Independent Study: Faculty-guided research and readings from the UNM Law & Mental Health series and ABFP-recommended sources.

Supervision and Professional Development Fellows receive a minimum of two hours of weekly, face-to-face supervision from Texas-licensed program faculty. Training is designed to transition the fellow from supervised practice to the independent production of high-quality forensic reports at a professional pace. Formal evaluations occur at six and twelve months to ensure clinical and professional growth.

Benefits and Requirements

  • Stipend: Fellows receive a competitive monthly salary/stipend with provisional reimbursement for professional travel, books, and conferences.

  • Resources: Access to both Price Proctor research database and UTSW library systems.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-approved program and have completed an APA-approved internship. Prior forensic experience is preferred but not required.

Doctoral Internship in Forensic Psychology & Neuropsychology

Overview Price | Proctor offers a specialized doctoral internship designed for students seeking to develop a "Forensic Mindset" within a private practice setting. Our training emphasizes objectivity, the management of personal bias, and the development of high-level assessment skills. We offer a developmentally oriented approach, tailoring supervision to help interns meet their specific professional goals.

Training Tracks Interns may choose between two primary tracks, with the flexibility to gain experience in both areas based on interest and prior training:

  • Track #1: Forensic Neuropsychology

    • Focus: Advanced case analysis involving traumatic brain injury, performance validity, and the detection of feigning.

    • Casework: Independent Neuropsychological Evaluations (IMEs) for civil litigation, fitness for duty, capital case mitigation (Atkins claims), and civil capacity (guardianship/testamentary).

    • Ideal Candidate: Students with a strong foundation in neuropsychological test administration and interpretation.

  • Track #2: Forensic Psychology

    • Focus: Pre-employment and occupational evaluations for public safety positions (police, fire, detention) and criminal forensic assessments.

    • Casework: Competency to stand trial, sanity evaluations, risk assessments, and critical incident clearances (e.g., officer-involved shootings).

    • Ideal Candidate: Third- or fourth-year students interested in private practice or forensic specialization. Prior forensic experience is not required.

Training Activities & Didactics The internship is heavily assessment-focused (85–90% of time), involving record review, clinical interviewing, personality and neuropsychological testing, and forensic report writing. Training is supplemented by:

  • Weekly UTSW Forensic Psychiatry Seminars: Interdisciplinary learning with forensic psychiatry faculty and fellows.

  • Monthly Price Proctor Didactics: Rotating topics including ethics, multicultural diversity in assessment, and peer-review for forensic journals.

  • Research Opportunities: Involvement in article writing, literature reviews, and journal submissions. Access to our internal database of forensic cases is available for interested interns.

Schedule and Supervision

  • Commitment: Two full days and one half-day on-site (2.5 days total).

  • Required Presence: Interns must be available for a full day on Tuesdays. Other days are flexible, though many interns choose Wednesdays to participate in criminal forensic evaluations and complete reports from evaluations on Tuesday.

  • Supervision: Interns receive face-to-face, evidence-based supervision from our diverse faculty of licensed psychologists and board-certified specialists.

Location & Facilities Our office is located in Dallas, Texas (Greenville Ave), featuring covered parking and after-hours access. All training and supervision is conducted on-site; remote clinical training is not supported.
